What are differences between Influenza (commonly known as the flu) and COVID-19?

As flu season approaches, many of us will be asking “Is this the flu or COVID”? Both influenza and COVID-19 have many similar symptoms. Both the flu and COVID-19 are contagious respiratory illnesses caused by viruses. While they have some common symptoms, they can affect people differently. Additionally, because influenza has been around for much longer, we know more about how to treat and prevent it, whereas we still have much to learn more about COVID-19.

Did you know? The flu and COVID-19 are caused by two different viruses. The flu is caused by influenza A and B viruses. COVID-19 is caused by a new coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. Read more about SARS-CoV-2 from the CDC here.

So How Do They Spread?:

The viruses that cause the flu and COVID-19 spread very similarly. They both:
-Spread between individuals who are in close contact (within 6 feet). Tip: socially distance when in public and wear a mask!
-Spread through respiratory droplets or aerosols released in the air by talking, sneezing or coughing. These tiny droplets can land in the mouth or nose of someone nearby or be inhaled. Tip: Wear your mask properly, covering both your nose and mouth fully.
-They both can also spread if a person touches a surface with one of the virus droplets on it and then the person touches their mouth, nose, or eyes. Tip: Wash your hands frequently and carry a small hand sanitizer with you in public.

Symptoms of the Flu and COVID-19 Can Include:

-Fever
-Cough
-Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
-Tiredness
-Sore throat
-Runny or stuffy nose
-Muscle aches
-Headache
-Nausea or vomiting (more common in children than in adults).
It is possible to have both the flu and COVID-19 at the same time. Symptoms alone will not determine which you may have. You may test for both of these illnesses to determine which, if any, you have.

Did you know? Typically with the flu symptoms last for 1 to 4 days whereas with COVID-19 a person can experience symptoms for about 5 days after being infected, but symptoms can appear 2 to 14 days after infection.

The best prevention against either the flu or COVID-19 is vaccination!

Flu
There are multiple FDA-licensed influenza vaccines produced annually to protect against the 4 flu viruses that scientists expect will circulate each year.
COVID-19
Currently, there are three COVID-19 vaccines have been authorized for use by FDA under an EUA (Emergency Use Authorization). There are other vaccines to prevent COVID-19 are under development.
