Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition that affects millions of women worldwide, yet it often goes undiagnosed or misunderstood. By recognizing the symptoms and understanding how it impacts your body, you can take proactive steps toward managing it.

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic medical condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This tissue can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic lining, and even other organs, leading to inflammation and scar tissue. Women with endometriosis often experience discomfort, which may affect their daily activities and overall quality of life.

What Are the Symptoms of Endometriosis?

The symptoms of endometriosis vary from mild to severe and may include:

  • Pelvic pain, especially during menstruation

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Bloating or gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhoea or constipation

  • Difficulty conceiving/infertility

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis.

What Kind of Pain Comes with Endometriosis?

Pain is one of the hallmark symptoms of endometriosis. It can range from mild discomfort to debilitating cramps. Many women describe it as a sharp, stabbing, or throbbing sensation in the lower abdomen or back. Pain often intensifies during menstrual periods but may also occur during ovulation or daily activities like exercise.

What Will My Cycle Be Like with Endometriosis?

Endometriosis can cause irregular menstrual cycles. Women often experience:

  • Heavy periods lasting more than seven days.

  • Shorter cycles with frequent bleeding.

  • Spotting between periods.

If your cycle seems unpredictable or significantly different from the norm, it may be a sign of endometriosis. Excessive bleeding is a common symptom of endometriosis. Known as menorrhagia, this can lead to clots and severe blood loss, often resulting in anaemia or extreme fatigue. If you notice consistent heavy bleeding, it’s important to discuss this with your doctor.
