What is Boric Acid?
Boric acid is a weak acid that has been commonly used in medical applications as an antiseptic to treat minor cuts, burns, and acne. As an acid, it also has benefits in maintaining acidic environments and thus has expanded its use to a larger number of medical conditions.
What does Boric Acid treat?
A disruption in the vagina’s naturally acidic environment can lead to infection from organisms such as yeast or bacteria that do not typically survive in that environment. This growth can lead to unwanted, uncomfortable symptoms such as intense itching, irritation, cramping, and foul odor.
Boric acid has been found to be beneficial as it can help return the vagina’s pH to equilibrium and decrease excess organism growth. Examples of infections boric acid is used to treat include bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections.
How to use Boric Acid Vaginal Suppositories?
Recommended dose is 600 mg per suppository. Typical treatment includes leaving one suppository overnight for seven days. For recurring infection, the treatment is typically extended to 14 days. Consult with your provider to determine the best treatment length for you.
While a suppository can seem intimidating, it can be done feasibly through the following steps:
- Wash hands thoroughly and remove capsule from packaging
- Lie back or stand with your knees bent
- Use your fingers or an applicator (if provided) and insert the suppository as far as it will comfortably go
- The suppository should dissolve in only a few minutes, but you can wear a panty liner to protect your clothing from discharge from the suppository
- Wash hands thoroughly afterwards
Overall, boric acid vaginal suppositories are well-tolerated and typically have few side effects. Some that can occur include increased discharge or vaginal itching. In general, this medication should be avoided in pregnancy or when there are open wounds in and around the area, and should NOT be taken orally.
