What are Diazepam Vaginal Suppositories used for?

Diazepam vaginal suppositories are used to treat pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, poor urinary stream, and urinary frequency and urgency. It is a a small white, waxy, bullet-shaped pellet that is inserted in the vagina.

Diazepam is a medication that belongs to the group of drugs known as benzodiazepines. It work by enhancing the effects of the neurotransmitter GABA which has muscle-relaxant properties. Since diazepam elevates the effects of GABA by reducing the excitatory effects of other neurotransmitters, it is able to produce a reduction in the muscle tone in the pelvic region.

What are the side effects?

The potential side effects of diazepam vaginal suppositories include:

  • drowsiness
  • local vaginal irritation
  • headache
  • pain
  • diarrhea
  • abnormal ‘high’ mood
  • runny nose
  • problems falling asleep or staying asleep

Please contact your pharmacist or medical provider if you begin experiencing any side effects. It is important not to have alcohol while using diazepam vaginal suppositories.

How do I use Diazepam Vaginal Suppositories?

To use Diazepam Vaginal Suppositories:

  1. Wash hands and outside of vaginal area using mild soap and water. Dry well with a clean towel.
  2. Remove plastic wrapping from suppository and get into position by squatting or lying down on your back with your knees bent and legs slightly apart.
  3. Gently, but firmly, insert the suppository into the vagina, pointed end first. Push as far as it will go comfortably, making sure it cannot slip out.
  4. Close legs and wait a few minutes for the suppository to dissolve before getting up.
  5. Wash hands again after application of the product.

Tips to keep in mind:

  • STORAGE: Store in refrigerator when not in use to prevent the product from melting.
  • PRECAUTIONS: NOT safe to use when pregnant or breastfeeding, but can be used while on a period. Keep out of reach of children.
