Naltrexone is considered an opioid antagonist, which blocks the action of opiate drugs (such as hydrocodone) in the body. It is taken by mouth and is approved by the FDA at higher doses for its use as treatment to alcohol or opioid addictions. However, low doses of naltrexone (LDN) can reduce inflammation, reduce autoimmune activity and to modulate the immune system. It has been demonstrated to reduce severity of symptoms in various conditions such as Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Lupus, fibromyalgia, and more.
Did you know? Naltrexone is an opiate antagonist that is taken orally to block opioid docking sites (receptors) on cells.
It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of addictions to opioids and alcohol. But, at significantly lower doses, low-dose Naltrexone has been used off-label as a treatment for various types of cancers, HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), emphysema, as well as multiple sclerosis (MS) and other autoimmune diseases.
How does LDN work?
When LDN attaches to opioid receptors, the drug blocks endorphins from attaching to them, which causes the body to release additional endorphins. Then, a surge in endorphins causes increased activity from stem cells and immune cells, making your immune system work more efficiently. Endorphins are hormones secreted by the brain which bind to opioid receptors, producing analgesic effects. The most common dosages of LDN are 1-5mg capsules.
Are there any side effects?
LDN is tolerated well because the dose is very low. Some patients may experience insomnia, vivid dreams, or headaches upon initiation. These side effects typically resolve with time. However, if you have any problems with insomnia or vivid dreaming, you should try taking LDN earlier in the day to avoid side effects.
Who can LDN help?
Studies show that LDN helps patients that have any of the below:
-Fibromyalgia.
-Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
-Lupus.
-Cancer.
-Arthritis.
-Autoimmune Diseases.
-Multiple Sclerosis.
-Depression.
-Sarcoidosis.
