Naltrexone & it’s Benefits

Naltrexone is classified as an opioid antagonist and at traditional higher doses it is commonly used to treat alcohol or opioid addictions. However, it has been found that at a lower dose it has a wide range of other benefits. Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) has been found to reduce inflammation, reduce autoimmune activity, and maintain the immune system. With these effects, it is beneficial in conditions including cancer, HIV/AIDs, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, amongst other autoimmune diseases. LDN is also a beneficial tool in weight loss as it helps regulate appetite and promote feelings of fullness.

Low-dose naltrexone drug works by attaching to opioid receptors and blocking endorphin release. This causes a further surge of endorphins—increasing stem cell and immune cell activity and efficiency which ultimately produces the drug’s analgesic and other beneficial effects. It is recommended to take LDN with food at bedtime. In general, it is a well-tolerated drug especially at lower doses (typically a 1-5 mg dose). If side effects were to occurthey may include insomnia, vivid dreams, or headaches upon initiation but these generally resolve with time. If these side effects persist, LDN can be taken earlier in the day to avoid them while sleeping.

Due to its minimal side effects and wide array of benefits, Naltrexone and Low-dose naltrexone have become increasingly popular.
