A tonsil fire extinguisher is a lidocaine 2% or 4% throat spray. It is used as a fast acting, soothing and relief agent for post tonsillectomy pain or severe oropharyngeal pain. Use throat spray as needed.

Side effects from this medication are infrequent and typically limited to localized symptoms including burning or prolonged numbness in the throat. Numbness in the throat may feel similar to the sensation of gagging.
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may be allergic to lidocaine and should stop treatment immediately: itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, or trouble breathing.

Directions: 1-2 sprays to the left and right sides of the back of the throat. Use every 2 hours as needed for pain.
Duration: Treatment time varies for each patient, depending on why your doctor prescribed the medication and how you respond to treatment.
Storage: Store medication in refrigerator when not in use. Protect medication from direct light and sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
