GLP-1 Injectables
Semaglutide
What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is used to treat type 2 diabetes & for long-term weight management. This drug belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which works by mimicking the effects of the hormone GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) in the body. When used as a weight management treatment, Semaglutide helps control appetite, regulates blood sugar, and promotes the feeling of fullness.
What are side effects of Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is typically well-tolerated, but like any medications, it can cause side effects in some individuals. Most possible side effects are GI related, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, & abdominal discomfort. At Preston’s Pharmacy, we compound Semaglutide with Vitamin B6 to decrease these unwanted GI side effects.
How long does it take Semaglutide to work?
Semaglutide’s noticeable effects on weight loss varies among individuals. Generally, significant weight loss can be observed within a few weeks to a couple of months of starting. However, it’s important to remember that individual responses to the medication may differ due to factors such as metabolism, lifestyle choices, and adherence to the treatment plan. Consulting with your pharmacist, we will provide personalized guidance on how long it may take for Semaglutide to work effectively for each person’s weight loss journey.
What makes Semaglutide different?
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that reduces appetite control & has fewer side effects compared to other weight loss medications. These other treatments focus solely on reducing caloric intake or increasing physical activity, but Semaglutide combines these effects with it’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels and enhance the feeling of fullness.
Who can take Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is generally recommended for adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 of higher, indicating obesity, or for adults with a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight- related medical condition. It is typically prescribed for individuals who have not achieved sufficient weight loss through diet and exercise alone. However, individual eligibility can vary, and it is important to consult a healthcare provider to determine if Semaglutide is a suitable option based on your medical history, current health status, and weight loss goals.
How do you inject Semaglutide?
Subcutaneous Injection
- Wash your hands with soap and water & assemble your Semaglutide vial, 2 alcohol prep pads, syringe, & a sharps container (tip: an empty bleach or detergent container works).
- Pull the tab on top of the vial, revealing the rubber stopper. Wipe down the top of the vial with an alcohol pad. Next, take the syringe out & remove the cap, being very careful not to let anything touch the needle.
- Push the needle into the hole of the rubber stopper of the vial. Turn the vial & syringe upside down. Slowly pull the plunger down past the prescribed dose, then slowly push the plunger back up to the prescribed dose (this removes any air bubbles). Check the dosage in the syringe & carefully remove the syringe from the vial.
- Locate the desired injection. Injection sites are: glute, thigh, arm, & stomach. For the glute, with the help of another, inject in the upper, outer quarter towards the hip bone. For the thigh, inject in the middle of the thigh, slightly towards the outside. For the arm, with the help of another, inject in the back, thick skin of the upper arm. For the stomach, inject in the middle of the stomach, two inches to either side of the belly button. Make sure to alternate injection sites each time, either different locations or different sides of the body.
- Wipe down the injection site with an alcohol wipe. Hold the syringe between your thumb, index, and middle fingers like a pen or dart. Touch the needle to your skin and quickly slide it into the skin. Quickly pull the needle straight out of the skin. Lastly, place the syringe in the sharps container for safe disposal.

This medication has proven to be highly effective in promoting weight loss while also providing the added benefit of improving glycemic control. With Tirzepatide, patients have reported experiencing weight loss & fewer fluctuations in blood sugar levels, helping them maintain energy and focus throughout the day.

What makes Tizepatide different?
Tirzepatide stands out among other weight loss treatments due to having milder side effects & targeting both GLP-1 & GIP receptor agonists. The dual agonism of Tirzepatide might contribute to its better gastrointestinal tolerability, making it a more comfortable option for some patients. Also, the addition of the GIP hormone triggers insulin secretion & sensations of fullness, offering an extra weight loss boost.
