Berberine: “Nature’s Semaglutide”

Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid, a chemical found in plants. It is naturally derived from barberry, chinese goldthread, goldenseal, tree turmeric, and oregon grape. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine, Berberine managed blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure. However, it has other notable properties as an antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory agent. Recently, the drug has been gaining popularity as “nature’s semaglutide” as a cheaper alternative for weight loss. This is due to Berberine helping curb appetite and improve blood sugar levels.

While Berberine is in the beginning stages of research regarding weight loss, studies have identified the drug as having mild effects on weight loss. In a 12 week study, overweight patients taking berberine 500mg capsules three times a day had an average loss of 5lbs. In addition, there was a reduction of BMI by approximately 3% and body fat of 3.6%. Individuals that choose to take berberine may see a some reduction in weight. 

Berberine is a dietary supplement that is widely available over-the-counter and without prescription as a capsule or tablet. The recommended dose is 500mg by mouth three times a day. It is recommended to take 30 minutes before a meal to avoid side effects such as:

• Constipation
• Bloating
• Upset stomach
• Diarrhea 

Other side effects that may occur include low blood glucose and blood pressure, especially in individuals that are taking prescribed medications. However, it is generally well tolerated. Women that are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid taking Berberine as it may cross the placenta and cause fetal harm.

Unlike semaglutide, Berberine only costs about $20 to $45 for a month supply. Although not typically carried in stores, Berberine is found in many online stores, even Amazon.
