What is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin problem where certain parts of your face get darker than usual. These dark patches are often brown or grayish-brown and can show up on your cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip. It’s more common in women, especially those with darker skin, and it often happens during pregnancy or when hormones change, like when taking birth control pills.

Unlike sun spots, which are usually induced by sunlight alone, melasma is more intricate. It’s stimulated by a blend of elements such as hormones, sun damage, and even genetics. Consequently, merely evading direct sunlight isn’t always sufficient to prevent those dark patches from emerging.

How to treat Melasma?

There are several different types of treatment when considering how to best handle melasma. The following are common, research based treatments:

  • Chemical peel: a chemical solution used to remove a damaged layer of skin, resulting in a lighter and brighter complexion
  • Microneedling: a procedure that creates microscopic tears in the skin, breaking up cells and causing the top layer of skin to regenerate
  • Laser: the laser treatment targets the skins outer layer by breaking down its pigment-producing melanin
  • Medications: ingredients may include hydroquinone, which is a bleacher; tretinoin, which evens out skin tone; or gentler medication like kojic acid or vitamin C, which are used to treat dark spots on the skin.
