Prescription Weight Loss Pills

Are you an adult who has serious health problems because of your weight? Have you tried diet and exercise but haven’t been able to lose enough weight? If you answered yes to these questions, a prescription weight-loss drug may be a choice for you.

Prescription drugs are medicines that a health care provider prescribes for you. You can’t buy them off the shelf in a drug store like you can buy nonprescription medicines. There’s no single best weight loss medication. The best one for you will be the one that gives you the results you desire, with as few side effects as possible, and at a cost you can afford. Generally speaking, pills are a more affordable option than injectables.

Just know that you need to use prescription weight-loss drugs in addition to — not instead of — a healthy diet and exercise.

Different Weight Loss Pill Options

There are several prescription weight loss pills available that are approved by regulatory agencies for the treatment of obesity. It’s important to note that these medications should be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional and as part of a comprehensive weight loss program that includes a healthy diet and regular physical activity. Here are some examples of prescription weight loss pills:

Orlistat (Xenical, Alli)

Orlistat works by blocking the absorption of dietary fat in the digestive system, leading to reduced calorie intake. It is available in both prescription (Xenical) and over-the-counter (Alli) forms.

Phentermine (Adipex-P, Lomaira)

Phentermine is an appetite suppressant that affects the central nervous system. It helps to reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness. Phentermine is typically prescribed for short-term use due to its potential for dependence and side effects.

Lorcaserin (Belviq)

Lorcaserin acts on certain receptors in the brain to promote a feeling of fullness, thereby reducing appetite. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for long-term weight management, but it was voluntarily withdrawn from the market in 2020 due to concerns about potential cancer risks.

Naltrexone/Bupropion (Contrave)

This medication is a combination of two drugs that work together to reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness. Naltrexone/bupropion may help with weight loss in patients who are obese or overweight with at least one weight-related condition.

Phentermine/Topiramate (Qsymia)

Phentermine/topiramate is a combination medication that helps to suppress appetite and increase satiety. It is approved for use in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher or those with a BMI of 27 or higher and at least one weight-related condition.

It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine which prescription weight loss medication, if any, is suitable for you. They will evaluate your overall health, medical history, and weight loss goals to make an informed decision about the most appropriate treatment option.
