Testosterone, often referred to as the “male hormone,” plays a crucial role in the health of both men and women. While it is primarily causes male characteristics, such as muscle development and lowering of the voice, this hormone has a wide range of functions that go beyond gender-specific traits that women can benefit from as well.

What is testosterone?

A hormone made mainly in the testes in men, but is also made in small amounts in the ovaries in women. It belongs to a group of hormones known as androgens. Production increases during puberty and generally peaks in early adulthood and then will slowly decline with age.

Why is this hormone important?

  • Maintenance of bone density
    • Testosterone plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health and promoting the growth and strength of bones. Low levels can cause bone loss and conditions like osteoporosis.
  • Mood and cognitive function
    • Improves mood and cognitive function in both men and women. Low testosterone levels can cause mood disorders such as depression and mental decline
  • Libido and sexual function
    • Testosterone is important in sexual desire for both men and women, and can cause high libido, erectile function in men, and sensitivity of sexual organs in women. Low levels can lead to sexual dysfunction and less interest in sexual activity.
  • Red blood cell production
    • Testosterone stimulates production of red blood cells which is important for maintaining healthy blood levels and oxygen transport throughout the body
  • Metabolism and fat distribution
    • Higher testosterone levels often cause reduced body fat and an increase in lean muscle mass
  • Cardiovascular health
    • Myth: Testosterone is bad for your heart
      • Testosterone actually protects the heart and results in a reduced risk of heart disease!
  • Energy
    • Higher testosterone levels can lead to higher energy and an overall positive impact on a person quality of life.

How will I know if I’m low?

  • Many have low testosterone levels and don’t even know it!
    • reduced sex drive, greater joint and muscle pains, loss of hair, difficulty maintaining erections, breast discomfort or enlargement, hot flashes or sweats, increased fatigue, and less enjoyment in personal hobbies could suggest that you have low testosterone levels
